Many parents usually ask me this question, “When should I start preparing my child for school?” I always emphasize on the importance of developing one’s memory skills at an early age. Researchers from Stanford University studied the brains scans of children solving math equations and they learned that these children were using more of the memory section than the counting section of the brain.
The sooner your child starts schooling, the better. For me, this is a wise decision as a parent because a child can’t go on counting his fingers forever. He will heavily rely on his memory skill as he ages. Eventually, once he reaches higher mathematics, solving equations will become second nature to him.
According to a research spearheaded by Vinod Menon, PhD, early math lessons modifies a child’s brain. This research, published seven years ago, studied the brain activities of 2nd grade and 3rd grade students. It showed significant results in the brain’s capability to solve problems.
Professor Vinod Menon cited that you will see noticeable changes in just a year. He added that in a such a short period of time, learning math can definitely change the brain, and it can improve in terms of function and skill. Indeed, early math lessons have positive effects in a child’s developing brain.
Furthermore, Menon shared that there were no changes in the brain regions. However, the way the brain responded to simple and complex arithmetic tasks have changed. Today, Professor Vinod Menon and his team are continuing his research on math anxiety, math abilities in children with autism, and other related topics.
With that being said, it is evident that early math lessons are beneficial for your children and they will be better at math later in life. At JAMS, we provide a strong foundation of mental mathematics. I am proud to say that in the Portland and Beaverton area, JAMS is the only math school that is certified by the League for Soroban Abacus.
In using the Abacus & Anzan instruction, we are able to uncover your child’s natural ability to perform mathematical operations. JAMS students are able to continually improve their concentration and memory over time.
It is never too late to give your child the power of numbers! You can schedule a FREE assessment now by calling 503-386-1407 or visit https://jamsportland.com/ for more details.
At JAMS, we will help your child overcome the fear of numbers. Your child will become more confident and most importantly, he will gain an important lifelong skill. For more information, just visit JamsPortland.com to learn more about the teaching pillars of the abacus.
