THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL EXERCISES

Over the years I’ve been teaching mental math, I have noticed trends in certain age groups. Younger children tend to get more physical exercise than children that are older. As children progress in school, they lose privileges such as recess or taking breaks. The older children get, the more mental exercise they get through more advanced education and longer school days. This affects how their brains work too. Just like children need time to expel energy and exercise their bodies, it’s just as important for them to exercise their brains.

According to a study published on the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences website, memory exercises increase the so-called “fluid intelligence” and improves the ability to figure out and fix problems. Fluid intelligence is the ability to reason and to solve new problems independently of previously acquired knowledge.

Aside from that, you get the perks of a sharper mind and a healthier body. As a parent, you can help your child’s brain to be exceptionally developed, to stay in shape, and to reach its highest potential. Mental math exercises may not appeal to those kids who dislike math, but if some parts of the brain remain unexplored, it will be unsuccessful in doing calculations effectively.

For your children’s brain to develop the right way, activity and interaction are needed by the brain. When a baby is born, there are over 100 billion neurons and connections that are made when various mental activities are introduced.

For babies, learning how to crawl is vital in brain development. Crawling does not only help a baby to move, but studies show that crawling can prevent learning speech and learning difficulties. Obviously, young children are going to greatly benefit from this. As they will continue to grow, the demand of more brain exercises will also grow higher.

You can encourage your kids to play puzzles, riddles, and memory games. Since they are kids they will quickly tire of a certain activity and want to do something different. The brain at all ages, craves novelty. They want these mental exercises to be to engaging and enjoyable.

Mental math will never be boring at JAMS. Every JAMS student has the ability to calculate swiftly and accurately. To instill a solid foundation of mental mathematics, JAMS uses the Abacus & Anzan method and this gives any child the ability to shine in different STEM subjects. Moreover, our Abacus-centric instruction will also boost their confidence and self-esteem.

Aside from enhancing the mental math skills, below are the other benefits in learning the abacus:

  • Sharpens the brain.
  • Enhances concentration.
  • Improves basic math skills.
  • Develops speed and accuracy in solving.
  • Helps in other fields like reading and writing.
  • Improves listening skills.
  • Builds self-confidence.
