Both of our children started JAMS of Portland when they were in Kindergarten. They read books all the time so I was not worried about reading. However we felt that for them to succeed in math, they needed a good foundation to build their confidence early. So we started them with JAMS and we have been very pleased. They are in second and fourth grade now. Because of JAMS, they have no problems keeping up with school math. At times, they would say that school math is too ease 🙂

I highly recommend Japanese Abacus Math School of Portland to any parent interested in helping their child develop math skills. We live in Hawaii and my son attends virtual classes. We started when COVID hit and schools shut down as a way to supplement my son's learning. Schools are fully open again but we've chosen to continue with abacus because of the tremendous benefit. I've seen a big improvement not only in my son's math skills but also his ability to concentrate and persevere through difficult problems. The owner, sensei Miwako, is wonderful as well as the other teachers. We are very happy!

We are grateful to have found JAMS for our children, esp during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our son started with JAMS online last year. What started out as a possible summer activity has turned into a very positive experience. He loves math and JAMS has been able to augment it further, which is evident in his excitement to attend (in-person) classes or do the homework. It was an absolute good decision to bring my both kids in Abacus math school. They have improved significantly in their calculation and math skills. They have also become independent in solving math question. Teachers are also very helpful and do what each kid needs.

Our son has been with the JAMS program for the past 6 months. He thoroughly enjoys it. The program is extremely well structured, managed and presented to the students. Teachers take full responsibility of guiding the child through it which is important since we do not have any background in abacus math. It was exciting to see the progress in our child in doing calculations. But the most importantly we also found that the program also built focus and discipline and I would highly recommend it.

JAMS Portland - The best abacus teachers your could find ! More than the ability to use the abacus instrument, JAMS has made my kid enjoy Math and he is 2 grades ahead- this is a life long gift!. Arithmetic is something we do every time, JAMS gives kids this ability to do it in their head - way faster than a calculator. It takes significant dedication from both the kid as well as parents. My wife signed up our children of 5 and 8 years old after hearing that schools are dumbing down kids with common core math. I was a bit concerned about the cost of the tuition initially, partly because I was comparing it to the value of other after school activities.After just one quarter of class, I’m now blown away at the results we’ve seen. We’ve expected our 8 year old to do well, but what’s amazing is that our 5 year old is motivated and tackling math with confidence. Our kids feel encouraged after every class, and I think that can be attributed to the great teaching. The teachers and the programs are professional and top notch. I don’t know why schools don’t teach abacus instead of common core.

This Soroban school provides an amazing learning environment for cultivating discipline and skill in mathematics, despite the fact that our son has been taking the lessons 100% remotely. The teachers are always punctual, fair, and patient. Seeing his own success in class, our son has learned to do homework by himself without much encouragement.

My son is currently a third grader. He started with JAMS this past summer exclusively online since we live out of state and is now continuing into the winter term. My husband himself learned abacus as a child and his ability to do math in his head just blows me away. I know that if my son, or any child for that matter, sticks with abacus to the highest level, he can be faster than a calculator. But this is not the reason why I signed him up. I wanted him to have a tool for mental exercise that, once learned, no one can take it away from him and it will aid him in more ways than he will realize. Another main draw with JAMS is their teachers! They love what they do and they're devoted to their students-- it's more that you can ever ask for from teachers.

We enrolled at JAMS during the pandemic to supplement our son's online Math lessons from school. Our 2nd grade daughter joined JAMS last year with virtual classes due to the pandemic. We were not sure how productive it would be considering no in person class, but to our surprise, the teaching methodology, practice materials and active feedback loops with teachers, kicked and kept the momentum high throughout the year. It is definitely challenging but requires discipline and dedication and a lot of time investment from parents to be successful. We have seen our daughter become super confident in Abacus in just one year. The only wish, we should have started her earlier 🙂 . Definitely recommend!

We have been going to JAMS for almost 7 years now. We started with our daughter and now our younger one goes there too. It is a school to learn math using the abacus but it is so much more. It taught our kids discipline, resilience and confidence in test taking and competing. I enrolled my second one at the age of 5 and I felt overwhelmed when first day of class he started crying. I spoke to Sensei and told her that I was taking him out; Lets start next quarter. Little did i know then, that JAMS will become an important part of his life. He loves going to JAMS, is super disciplined about finishing his HW and more so, he is fond of Sensei Miwako. It is one big family where you talk about the mistakes and get rewards for your success. Our daughters (8 and 6) have been going to JAMS for last two years now. When my wife first got them enrolled I thought this was expensive and I was not sure if our kids were too young to get value out of this. I couldn’t have been more wrong! Going to the class has built a strong foundation for them in maths and I am amazed at their mental math skills. They constantly impress people at parties with their mental math skills. The senseis are good, professional and provide you an accurate picture of your child’s progress. One advice I would have for parents is that your personal involvement is needed.. the sensei is not a replacement for a parent. Your kids will progress more if you are engaged. We stay on top of the girls homework and give them math puzzles to solve while driving around.. it’s not a lot but still that gentle push from parents is needed. Overall very satisfied with our experience and would totally recommend this place!

My daughter is in first grade and has been part of this school for about 1 year . During the initial assesment Sensei Miwako hinted that our daughter's graph would be exponential to grasp the concepts and problem solving skills, we were little bit skeptical about it but after 1 year we could witness a confident child with an incredible improvement not only in solving complex 4th grade math problems, concentration skill, memory power but also developed a positive attitude towards life. We strongly believe this experience would extend the horizons of our child to become a better individual .All the Sensei have lot of experience and have an uniqueness in teaching the kids. My kids have been going to Jams over 3 years now. Jams teachers have not only given them academic push to a great extent but all taught them life lessons over time. Lara started at JAMS March of last year, right when the first ‘stay at home’ order was issued, and businesses shut down for in person. She had never used an abacus before and had no idea how to manipulate it. She started online and struggled in the beginning. The teachers were understanding, responsive and most importantly encouraging. Any concerns we had, the head of the program met with us and patiently listened, offered solutions, and commended our daughter for sticking with the program and always trying. What amazes us most, is how the teachers were able to teach, not just the math but the use of the abacus, with speed and accuracy without ever being in the same room as her. Have a Kindergartener who has been going to JAMS for almost a year now. Online classes have been working well in the Covid era. Teachers ensure webcams are focused on the student's work and pay attention to the work the student is doing and help as required. Small class size of ~ 4 students enables 1:1 teaching. Kids are focused and concentrating on their work the entire duration of the class. They have skilled teachers and very disciplined. Booklets are great to practice. Some times booklets are repeated when student make some mistakes. which makes kids feel boring doing same thing again. Instead, i recommend to give new problems which makes kids more interesting. To avoid making mistakes, i feel that teacher should make sure that student understand the concept before they start practicing it. Tuition fee is little expensive at beginner level. Overall feel great in sending my kid to JAMS and recommend.

We have been JAMS parents for more than 5 years now. For our now 10yr old, abacus has become a part of her identity. She went from the kindergartner staying awake to finish her homework to fifth grader that can do math faster than both her parents.Many of my friends asked me why enroll the kid in JAMS when they can flip open the calculator app on their phone. I find this question analogous to spelling bee. Why teach our kids to learn the correct spellings of words when they can use spell check for their essays? Learning how to spell teaches them the origin, meaning and etymology of the words. The 7-digit numbers that once seemed daunting to her are now her best friends. The annual competition that Sensei organizes taught her to take inspiration from the winners AND be humble about her own successes.
